The Gospel According to Andre’

The documentary about Andre’ Leon Talley was riveting. The depth of fashion history and insight into the fashion industry he posses is unprecedented. It was inspiring to discover his story as a young boy in the rural south growing to discover his passion for fashion.

His unapologetic approach and determination to be a pillar in the fashion industry is nothing less than amazing.

One thing I found most admirable of his undeniable unique approach to fashion is the fact that he did not appear interested in trends of the moment. Instead he appeared more interested in the lasting emotional connection and visual stimulation resulting from an impeccable ensemble.

Andre’ Leon Talley’s unapologetic authenticity and dedication to his passion injected me with an infusion of motivation and inspiration to continue to on my journey to bring my first capsule collection to fruition.

The vulnerability he displayed reminded us that amongst the glory, persona, the grandiose stature of a man draped in the finest threads that fashion has to offer is a human being that sacrificed his personal pursuits, in the midst of his dream to ensure that his voice was heard around the world.

This film is not only a film about fashion, but about the life of a man that forged forward through barriers to claim his stake in the world.

The film is a must see for those interested in an aspiring story about living your passion and finding your place in the world.

BRAVO, Mr. Andre’ Leon Talley!

Thank you kindly for sharing.

This is all about the Invisible Zipper

Zippers serve various purposes and applications, but it is the invisible zipper that is my favorite.

IMG_5638

Learning how to install an invisible zipper so it is truly invisible is a skill. When I first attempted to install an invisible zipper on a linen skirt, it was a long and tedious process that involved the dreaded seam ripper.

img_5602

The most challenge part is learning how to align up the zipper in the seam allowance while ensuring an even seam on the garment when fastened. A properly installed invisible zipper will result in a truly invisible seam.

img_5603

I recall breaking out into a sweat when the time arrived to install an invisible zipper. After several failed attempts, I realized it is all about the technique and process.

Each package has recommended steps and presser foot to install the zipper. But, I developed my own process that ensures I have a beautiful zipper installation each time.

img_5601

Invisible zippers are one of the sleekest fasteners, in my opinion. With the proper presser foot and practice, anyone can master the installation of the invisible zipper resulting in a beautifully fastened garment.

How to Organize Fashion Design Details

The design and sample making processes are underway at NYAM Studio. It’s an exciting time because I enjoy the process of compiling fabric swatches and constructing the garments. Each fabric choice and garment presents its own unique challenges or tweaks that will be required to make a beautiful garment.

Due to the level of detail involved during the design and sample making processes, I decided to use a magnetic/pin board to keep all elements on visual display. The design board includes the design sketches, sewing machine tension, serger tension, needles, thread, swatches, sources, and all other design notes incorporated into the creation of the sample.

This is an example of the “design board” for a sample that is currently on the cutting table.  Although some of the samples created may not be selected for the final collection, the creative processes involved definitely makes them worth documenting. In the event the concepts are revisited, all of the details will be catalogued and archived for future reference.

Retail Marketing. The Retail Magic.

Hello Audience. It’s Nice to Meet You.

2017 Summer Collection- 1980’s GRAFFITI ART Inspiration…

The program pushed me out of my comfort zone and provided me with the confirmation and a new thought process of how to approach the development of my first collection.

How to Create Marketing Style Photos with a Model

The challenge is to create a series of advertising style photos that highlight clothing and accessories worn by a model using specific lighting techniques and a cell phone camera.

This a first for directing, working with a model, styling and shooting a marketing style photo shoot for a product.

Initially, I was nervous about working with a model. However, after the model arrived and the styling began, the concept for the vision for the shoot began to flow and providing direction to the model was effortless.

The styling for the photos was developed to highlight the glasses. Details about the glasses are on the previous post Would you pay $25.75 for a pair glasses? – “Assembled Dopeness”

The shirt/cape was from the one yard design project and details about the design can found by clicking on this link The HARPER Collection – 1 Yard Design

The lighting for the photo shoot was achieved by using natural light, white board, and a mirror.

The camera used for the photoshoot was the iPhone 5se camera.

Do you think the photos marketed the glasses as the primary product?

Editorial Photo Shoot

The task is to create an editorial style photo with the constraints of pushing myself to work outside of my comfort zone and using clothing and accessories in an unconventional way.

The concept for this photo was to create a photo that focused on unconventional pairings of clothing and accessories. The contrast of the vintage lace shirt with a ruffled collar and pearl button. The glasses created a bit of edginess to the look to keep the look fresh and modern.

The shorts are a pair of NYAM vintage style shorts made with vintage denim.

What appears to be a broach is actually two bracelets (wood and resin)pinned on the shirt to create a bit of contrast and tie the look together.

The resin bracelet introduced a third dimension to the lace blouse and adds a bit of contrast against the wood bracelet.

The the color and texture of the wood bracelet compliments the wood beads on the glasses.

What do you think about this editorial style photo?

The HARPER Collection – 1 Yard Design

The Harper Collection is the result of creating a shirt with the design constraint of using one yard of fabric.

I cut one yard of muslin and began draping and pinning the fabric on the form . I had no idea of what would become of the draping but I decided to go with whatever idea came to mind first.

IMG_3708

The tucks created an asymmetrical neckline that gave the shirt a refined look, in my opinion. That’s when the name Harper for the shirt emerged.

Next, I marked the fabric and cut it to create a muslin that can be used to draft a pattern.

IMG_3965IMG_4028

With a limited amount of time remaining, I decided to refine the muslin. If time permitted drafting a pattern and making the design in fashion fabric, I would have chosen a teal wool fabric. IMG_3598.JPG

After the refinement of the muslin, I decided that sleeves would not be complimentary to the neckline and possibly make the shirt a bit over designed. Thus, I decided to go with a open sleeve/ cape design to allow the neckline to remain the focus of the shirt.

The final design resulted in a unique piece that can worn for any occasion or season.
